Bungy collapsing

May 13th, 2025

Back in the year 2000 I was 26, and like most people in their mid 20’s was just young and silly.

I was recently going though some archive files and came across a very old version of my website, and on there were photos of me bungy jumping in New Zealand. I remember this particular trip for several reasons.

Firstly, the bungy jump. Who would have ever thought that this is something I would do, but I did and I’m going to blame peer pressure - although I did enjoy it.

It was September 2000 and I was actually in Taupo for a training program (can’t recall what it was about) while working for Cap Gemini Ernst & Young. There were a bunch of us there, all from Australia, and some of us decided to scoot off during the lunch break and go bungy jumping - there wasn’t many, maybe 4 or 5 of us.

As you can see from the photos below I kind of collapsed over the edge rather than taking a big and powerful jump into the open space. There was a video (VHS in those days) but I have no idea what happened to that - thankfully!

Needless to say being on a work trip this didn’t go down well with those in charge!

The second reason I remember this trip so well is it happened to coincide with the wedding of my friends Andrew and Rachel.

Originally I wasn’t going to attend the wedding because I was a poor 26 year old, but when this trip came up I jumped at the chance. I even managed to exploit a loophole that meant the company paid for my in internal flights too (side note, I was the master of using travel loopholes when it came to international travel).

As Andrew and Rachel thought I wasn’t able to make the wedding I decided to keep it a surprise and reached out to Andrews mum to RSVP. She was all for keeping my visit secret - right down the the fact my place card at the reception table was labelled “Secret Guest”. It wasn’t until Andrew, then later Rachel, arrived at the church that they knew I was coming.

It was a great night, and 25 years later they’re still together and have 4 (now fully grown) children.
