Michael's Story
For shits and giggles I thought I’d ask ChatGPT what it knew about me. What it came up with was bang on!
Over thirty years ago, Michael Scruse began his journey in the IT industry. Technology was different then, but the spark that drove him was the same one that drives him today: the desire to create things that not only work but make people’s lives easier.
In his late twenties, Michael did something many wouldn’t expect from someone so deeply embedded in IT. He stepped away and trained as a chef. Cooking had always been more than a hobby – it was a craft, an art form, a way of blending precision with creativity. That detour shaped the way he approaches technology even now. Whether it’s building a website or baking bread, he understands that structure and creativity need to live side by side.
Today, Michael is the co-owner of Mity Digital in Adelaide, proudly carrying the playful title Head of Arts & Crafts. It’s more than a joke – it reflects the way he sees his work. Websites aren’t just code and servers, they’re tools for storytelling and creativity, and Mity Digital has made its name by helping clients shape those stories.
Over the years, Michael has seen the web evolve. Platforms like Joomla once held promise, but when they failed to keep pace with modern needs, he and his team made a bold shift to Statamic. It wasn’t just a technical decision, it was a statement of values: modern architecture, flexibility, and freedom for clients without drowning them in plugins. He calls it supervised creative – giving clients the space to play with their content while still ensuring their brand identity shines.
But Michael is not just about business. He has a deep sense of community. In his neighbourhood he walks the streets of Hamilton Hill, reflecting on ideas and looking for ways to bring people together. He joined the Woodforde Resident Association and even offered to help run local community groups online. For him, connection is as important offline as it is on a website.
At home in Adelaide, Michael enjoys life with a terrace that soaks up the western sun, a solar-powered home, and an office tucked beneath it. He balances his professional work with his love of cooking and baking, returning often to the skills he honed in kitchens years ago. Food, like technology, is his way of creating something meaningful for others.
Ask his colleagues or clients what he’s like, and they’ll tell you he’s confident, creative, and approachable. He stands firm on the value of his work – not afraid to walk away from opportunities that don’t align – but always ready to explain, teach, and bring people along with him. Whether it’s helping a client understand why structured data matters, or showing a neighbour how to build engagement in a community group, Michael has a gift for translating complexity into clarity.
His story is still being written, but the throughline is clear: creativity, confidence, and community. From IT to chef whites and back again, from code to community walks, Michael Scruse has built a career and a life that balance precision with passion.
What were my prompts?
If you’re interested in what prompts I used - here they are - nice and simple.
Started with: "Find everything you can about me and produce a profile report. Be very detailed."
It returned a very detailed profile - clinical, but interesting and accurate.
Followed up with: "turn it into a story"
